Keep in mind that it's not a parent / kid thing either...I'm a bit older (okay so quite a bit older) and I still get the same reaction from the wife and my son. He's 7 and at times will give me grief about some song that he doesn't like. Someone mentioned it earlier - get yourself some headphones. Many nights I leave the amp off and plug into a little 4-track recorder I have (PS-04) and just can play to my heart's content. I also have a RP200 that has a headphone and a jam-along port (plug the CD player / laptop into it) that works good for this.
Believe me there are days when the neighbors might be complaining because I need to feel that amp booming. But you need to be respectful of those you live with (parents, spouses, kids, pets, etc.). Not everyone wants to hear you running through that same song/scale/riff for the 27th time while your practicing at night :D
Good Luck!
