Okay, we don't need a discussion of thread hi-jacking here. And I don't want to have to explain to my daughter about anyone's interest in the Japanese school system. This is a family-oriented site and some of our members are adolescents themselves. Let's bear that in mind, please.

Threads can wander but so long as they focus on matters related to playing guitar, that's fine.

Just tell her they're talking about Yoko - Ono...and she'll be like - uuhhgg - what are they talking about her for. It's probably ain't no worse than trying to explain to her why people drink beer (SEE BEER THREAD.)

We all know it can be frustrating at times to see a thread creep to a different direction. It happens all the time. But the beauty of that is like a previous poster said, you get to see (hear) others thoughts and ideas as if you were in a room full of friends. Invariably it always happens that way in a conversation . You ask a question and it may be talked about but it strikes a thought about something different and thus a new converstion topic begins. It allows you to get to know people better by seeing the other sides of them that we may not have known previously. And its hard enough to get to know people behind a monitor.

If you are concerned about thread creep, or not getting an answer at all, then pm a person that you think will give you an answer.

Death to the "thought police" :P

Well let me clarify myself even better...

As a beginner you are already so overwelmed with information overload. You are worrying "Am I doing this right?" or "Am I doing that right?" So you ask a specific question and now you have 10 MORE things to worry about. You can't hold anyone's hand. Some of the BEST learning I have done (both guitar and life...) is just by doing it MYSELF at my own pace. If that pace be fast or slow so be it....

Here's a good NON guitar example...The only thing most people know about computers is how to go online, email, and some word processing...Now I am fairly good with computers and someone asks me "How do I....blah blah blah (usually a question about MS Word)?" (Fill in one of your questions about computers) and I start rambling on about RAM, ROM, processor speed, if you save the file as this, that....I usually get the "deer in the headlight" look.

But take it from a newbie...too much can frustrate someone. When I teach my students I follow the K.I.S.S. Principle (Keep It Simple Stupid) and that is when my students learn the most. My co-worker likes to create elaborate lessons and empties out our equipment room for one lesson and complains when they don't work.

We are mostly all humans here and just like in real life conversations the subjects tends to change to some degree.
Also, like others have mentioned, additional information may not be usable to whomever posted the thread but may be of use to someone else reading that thread.
Sometimes you find that, with the thread wandering off a bit, you get answers that you may not have thought of asking but you benefit from anyway.

It's the internet. It's a free site with a forum that accepts posts from all members. Ask for advice, you may get nothing or everything or a shotgun blast of irrelevancies. As with any such site, hang around a while, and you will begin to understand who gives the best advice on which topics, whose humor appeals to you, whose doesn't; who is cranky or petulant or genial or evil or demigod-like (save you some time: Nick) and maybe even which members actually own a guitar (don't be fooled by a few Photoshopped pix). So, really it's not free -- you will have to invest some time wading through answers and personalities and noise. Only you can decide whether it's worth that price.

In the webverse of such communities, this one works pretty well.

Hmmm I guess I could be said to own 2 guitars outright... I guess technically the bank owns the rest :0

Huh, I don't think I've been described as all of those in one sentence, "cranky or petulant or genial or evil or demigod-like "

BTW, (and I'm being serious here), it's good to see you back Mike. Keep on trucking.

Peace.

Simple. Guitars are made of wood, insane ammounts of latin-american forests gets chopped down to create our Gibsons. Not because we can't make composite guitars with proper sound (we can) but because guitarists are conservative and can't change their habits even if they'd want to. To make things worse those persons then spend their lives buying more of these forest-destroying devices and waste time plucking on strings strung over them, feeling all good about the various noises they produce. They could have got an extra job and send that money to those who need it to survive, or volunteer for the red cross instead of playing but they don't because they are so narrow minded they care only about themselves and their immediate surroundings. And when you think it can't get any better these losers waste their time on the internet explaining to total strangers why they are such horrible persons. It's just too bizarre for words.
