Simple. Guitars are made of wood, insane ammounts of latin-american forests gets chopped down to create our Gibsons. Not because we can't make composite guitars with proper sound (we can) but because guitarists are conservative and can't change their habits even if they'd want to. To make things worse those persons then spend their lives buying more of these forest-destroying devices and waste time plucking on strings strung over them, feeling all good about the various noises they produce. They could have got an extra job and send that money to those who need it to survive, or volunteer for the red cross instead of playing but they don't because they are so narrow minded they care only about themselves and their immediate surroundings. And when you think it can't get any better these losers waste their time on the internet explaining to total strangers why they are such horrible persons. It's just too bizarre for words.
Man I just hate not having my morning cup of caffine...how about you Arjen?
Careful Arjen, with your tongue stuck so firmly in cheek it may disfigure you.
You forgot to mention I recommend clubbed baby seal tusq as saddle material.

... and baby harp seal teeth make great f-board inlays and bridge pin decorations. And let's not forget the straps --- oooooh, the straps.

Bish: How I feel? Serious, sincere and passionate ofcourse.
Geoo: Wasn't too scared about this being locked. This site is one of the few places where the mods can tell a clown from a troll.
Mike: It's almost evening here. I'm worse in the morning...
Nick: Yeah, could have included that one. Was a bit scared some would take it too serious and get so self-concious they'd stop playing guitar. Which would be a shame, I don't want to feel responsible for all the wood-cutters and seal-clubbers being unemployed. That really creates massive social unrest.

LOL True, but I wasnt thinking about the mods locking it for your comment. I was thinking of the follow up comments. However, this was the one time this year I was wrong about something.

Bobble,
I agree with you on that. If someone asks what type of strings etc. then I don't see a problem with people giving their opinions/advice that's what it's all about. Maybe it's a little more than the poster asked for but more info can never be a bad thing.
On the other hand I've seen people say they want to buy a particular piece of equipment that so and so uses then there are a hundred reponses asking them why they want to do that? Don't they know it's not the equipment that makes the tone it's the player etc., etc.
"It's all about stickin it to the man!"
It's a long way to the top if you want to rock n roll!
Geoo: Don't feel bad, being perfect ain't that cool anyway, let me tell you that.
Cnev: The problem is that your idol probably DIDNT use it at all. So Hendrix used that Plexi thing? Sure he did, but he had his tech modify it and whatever reissue you'll find won't help you get that sound. Same with guitar: most signature guitars are hardly what the artist him/herself uses. Which doesn't mean you shouldn't buy it but does mean I *will* tell you that that stuff is not going to make you sound like your idol. If you don't believe me go to your local bar and check out the wannabe-Hendrix dudes with their strats, roger mayer octavers and fuzzfaces. They sound as much as Hendrix as I look like him. And I don't look very much like him to be perfectly honest.
In other words: the anwser you might want is not the answer you might get. And thats a good thing, if you already knew the answer we wouldn't bother replying.

Isn't cat gut a renewable resource?
Yes, if you only remove a little at a time. (I know, overboard)
It's renewable, but the bastards seem terribly attached to the stuff. Scratch like hell...
This is perhaps one of the more entertaining threads I've read on any forum in a very long time. It does underscore a problem: unwanted advice. The recent Randy Rhodes String thread is a good example. The question asked was, "What strings does he use?" It wasn't, "What strings will make me sound like Randy?" The first question requires a simple answer: GHS Boomers, 10s (I believe was the final judgement). The second prompts for more general responses: "None. It's not the strings that did it for him. Go find your own tone."; "It's pointless to try, he was l337 and you ain't."; etc.
The whole point is when a simple question (of fact) is asked, it's nice to see a simple (factual) answer. Thirty posts which do not contain an answer to the question can be frustrating for the poster (and others). Posting without answering the question is pointless. it's different when an opinion is asked. Then there's no worries for everyone to jump in with his $.02...
... As I have...
Fwiw, I've learned a lot here, and am glad y'all write as much as you do.

Just my arrogant opinion: if you just want to know what equipment someone used you should check google first. That takes about 4 seconds and gives you a 100% accurate and precise answer in most situations. If you want something else then a simple fact (like an opinion or a difficult to find fact) you can check GN. If I don't even try to find the answer in the most basic way myself then I have no right whatsoever to complain about the answers I get. What the heck, I don't have that right whatever it's about. Or to be more precise: I do have the right but the rest has the right to ignore my whining or even tell me to shut it and get of my arse and find the info myself. It's not like you can log on and demand instant information, you can politely ask for help and hope someone is kind enough to give 'any' kind of information. And luckily there are kind people here willing to help so it might actually work! If you're lucky.
Just dragging the topic back to the original question in a way it's hard not to strongly agree or disagree with the above.
The recent Randy Rhodes String thread is a good example.
I spent over an hour the other day trying to find out what strings Randy Rhodes uses.I now know more about the man than his Mom does!
Brass nuts are also a natural resource we should look after.Them brass monkeys do get a bit upset if you take them both!

OK, this leads back to the recent Randy Rhodes String thread,
I, Me, Myself, was the one that asked Why?
The question was what strings and I am on my way out to buy them now.
I didn't know what strings but, since I care about this young lad, I didn't want to see him go out and waste his hard earned money on the misconception that a particular string will give him the sound he is after.
I started the thread down a different path, period, I am not sorry I did. If I had it to do over I would do it the same.
I am certainly not alone, many other threads meander around the central topic no matter how simple the question,
That is life, get used to it because it won't be changing any time soon.
I've got to agree with Arjen - there are any number of questions here that could be answered quicker by typing a couple of words into Google than 5 sentences here on GN. Very often those questions are not very precise and sometimes downright confusing - it's hardly surprising that answers come to questions that were never asked.
I think it's unreasonable to be unhappy that you get more information than you asked for. The question may have been put by one individual, but there is a whole community that can benefit from a comprehensive discussion on the subject.
I'll give you an example of an exact answer to a question. The Brits will remember Dave Lee Travis and his Sunday Pub Quiz. On one show, he asked the team, from one of the pubs competing "Can you name all four Beatles?", to which the Captain replied "Yes". The question was correctly answered (and the team got the point), but the little extra "John, George, Paul and Richard" may well have been of interest to others, but according to some it's unwanted information. What do you do? I know I'd prefer that little extra.
I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

I know I'd prefer that little extra.
I agree. Sometimes I will reply to a post with hopefully the answer that is being looked for but I will sometimes add more to drive the conversation to see if there is anymore to it than just the basic answer.
A simple example of extra information that is helpful is when someone asks "what kind of strings do you use". Everyone could answer with "Elixir, D'Adds, Martin, etc." but I like to know "why" when I hear the answer. As long as the person gets the answer they are looking for I see no problem with expanding the question and the answer.
A classic case of overkill with benefits was when Mikespe asked how to raise a string and ended up with a tutorial on doing setups as an offer of assistance in solving his problem. He obviously did not want or maybe even need to hear that but after he was done with the thread two other people learned and successfully did full setups on their own.
