I did not write this....a friend did. I keep a copy at my desk for when I need a chuckle.
REF: Monster Cables
Enjoy.
.
It depends on the overtone you desire. For example, cables made with "Brazilian Copper" favor the darker bass side of the spectrum. Cables with Adirondack or Austrian plastic on the insulating sheaths enhance sustain. Some cables even contain fossilized mammoth dung as a dielectric spacer between the jack tip and shield, these of course are preferred by finger-style players.
The very best tonally responsive copper is "free range copper". This type of copper is only harvested in it's natural state, when found laying on the ground. You see mining copper with huge machinery drives out the free radical valiance electrons which give free range copper it's pure harmonic tap tone. You can actually pick up a piece of free range copper and tap it with a hammer and hear it's natural harmonics. Mined copper sounds weaker when tapped because the free electrons have been traumitized by the in-humane mining process. Some people claim that placing mined copper in front of speakers and playing Devo records repeatedly at max volume can restore some of the free valance electrons and result in a purer tap tone. But I think it's best to demand the real thing when buying a cable, pure book-matched free range copper.
Also most people agree you have to actually play the cable before buying, ideally several different cables, with a friend across the room who can comment on the quality of the harmonic overtones. Compare cables of different color and length before buying, and dont forget to get a cable humidifier to keep your cable from cracking.

Awesome, just way awesome! I actually had a serious discussion about it on a Dutch site and I was absolutely baffled by what people were saying. People with $150 guitars and $100 modelers going on and on and on about why they prefered the Ultraflex Spectraflex cable above whatever else because it enhanced their dynamics in a certain octave or god knows what. Sometimes people need a reality check: when you listen to a record you can often hear who is playing, what general kind of amp, the rough settings and what kind of pups (bucker, P90, singlecoil). You are not going to hear the brand of cable, brand of pick, carpet on which the amp stood, the model of the mic stand or the powersource of the mixerboard. And if you start to discuss just that you really need to ask yourself if worrying about that is going to be more productive then taking an extra lesson from a proper teacher...

I think I will have to save it myself. I am considering some new cables and don't live far from the Adirondacks. I should be able to get real fresh ones.

If you really care about tone, definitely. But the post above seems to indicate color can have an impact on tone as well, might have something to do with various light frequencies colliding with soundwaves, but I'll have to get a bit more research done about it. To be save I suggest going with an ultra-violet carpet first and if you like that gradually build up to more visible colors.

In response to Arjen from a few posts ago.

I heartily agree that people should attempt to find an answer on their own. But, when that research includes threads from a forum, it can get frustrating. I'm just saying that it's nice when a question asked is answered. It makes it easier for those-that-follow.

I always use google, forum searches, and similar prior to asking any questions. That's when the superflous replies become a hindrance. Many is the time I invoked a search, only to be rewarded with several hours' reading (and I read quickly) and never finding the answer.

Btw, weren't we talking about Japanese Schoolgirls? :D

You know Sarton, I think pretty much all of us agree on everything:

1) The poster should try a minute and find the answer first.
2) If that fails and he asks it here we should try to answer his question.
3) Once done we can go as far as we want for those that care, and those who don't can leave.

Seems to make everyone a winner.

And yeah, we were talking about Japanese schoolgirls. For this instance I'll see if I can google up some detailed info for you all. ;)

Good summary.

I would just change "leave" to "ignore" in the 3rd option.

I'd like to pipe in here because I am having this very problem on a different message board.

I am a newbie there. I have search with their little searchy tool but yet every time I ask a question it feels like I am putting them out and they say "You should learn to use our search tool" Well ya.. I did. :x

I totally agree that people should search for the information themselves first but when you are a total newbie at something it is very possible that you dont even know where to begin to search, what terms to search under, and not to mention that the search functions on ALL these messageboards really really really stink.. (No offense to this website because you know I think we are the best here, really)

But be careful giving to much advanced information to a newbie and really be careful using the "You should use the search tool" line. I probably wont go back to the other board.. They might not even want me back after my flame. Its not about something as important as guitar anyways. so no matter

Nils: I'm sorry, I mean 'leave that topic (alone)', not 'get yourself as far from GN as possible'. :D

Geoo: Oh, search options generally suck badly. But google doesn't. For example, if I want to know how Randy Rhoads got his sound, I go to google and type 'randy rhoads gear'. Then I press the first link it finds and I see his exact setup of guitar, amps and effects. And when I want a picture I chose the third link where you'll see the chain is so complex there's no way a specific brand of strings is going to have ANY impact on the final sound, so you're be best of chosing what feels best. Besides having found a big part of the answer you'll also have learned about Guitargeek.com, which you can use it you ever have such a question about another artist. Typing this post took longer then finding that info.

But then again I should stop being an arsehole, I'll never say 'search yourself' to someone except in this topic, since this is more of a general topic about the entire 'how to answer' stuff. If you can't find it, do ask it here. If I can't stand your question I should just take a hike and read something else. It's that simple, really.

Naa, your not an arse.. I totally agree with you google is great. Just too many "Go search yourself" comments really annoy newbies... of any hobbie it seems.
