About moistorizing:
Yes that's waht I thought too, somehow. It just keeps the skin "in shape". Even if it may soften it up a bit but the main point is that it doesn't let the skin poeel off which is much worse...
I am sure to try these thingies out! After all results may vary from person to person and I don't have anything to lose at the moment...
We will see how things turn out...
About filing: I do that if there actually a bit of skin starts to peel off.
Better safe than sorry
NO MORE THEORY!!

Jonsi,
I've filed them down also. Sometimes if you peel them off the leave a big hole and it's difficult to hold the strings down.
I play everyday and my fingertips are harder but they don't have really hard callouses.
If I play for more than 2-3 hrs at a time sometimes they get sore though.

It's a long way to the top if you want to rock n roll!
Here's something weird, I've only been playing for around a year, and I played for the first week and got callouses then took a week off for a vacation, came back, and have been playing steadily since, and my fingertips never really hurt and I never got anymore callouses. But granted, my fingertips are pretty hard after this year I just never got any major callouses.
Thanks Dudes!

here is another weird one. I have been playing little over 3 months. I play every night. I am the dishwasher at home so I end up doing the dishes alost everynight before I play. My fingers get sore once and a while if I play 3-4, but my normal 2 no problem and no pealed skin so far. Guess doing all the dishes has a side benifit :P

Don't know how you stand it. I live alone so I guess I am the dishwasher too, but I HATE playing guitar right after doing the dishes. I'll just wait an hour or so cause that is the only time playing really hurts for me. I think its been about 2 months of playing every day now and playing really doesnt hurt anymore. Other than after dishes like I stated.
Ohh and yes, I am also a filer. Hard to keep them skin hangies from plucking strings if I dont file every other day or so.

Jim,
I have a 9 year old daughter so I have to play when I can. I get from 6:30 - 8:30 to play. I shut down when my daughter goes to bed as my amp is on the same wall as her bed. I have been doing this for almost 4 months so I am use to that. I do like my weekends when I can play earlier in the day :)

I find this topic quite interesting...I however don't want the wife reading the ones that say washing dishes is fine... my callouses have been my excuse to stay out of the kitchen :D
Kevin
.... Another reason why I hate doing dishes, it can really kill my callouses! ....quote]
I had my wife buy some latex gloves which help save my callouses. I don't do dishes, but I have to clean the filter in a fish pond once a week. My callouses like the gloves but the fish don't care for my guitar playing.

does not work for me, but it beats cooking so......
That does not really bother me, but my shoulder does. Blasted tendinititis

Mine are always peeling off cos they're just flaky, but even when they do, the skin under has gotten quite flat and hard so its not really a problem. I just don't like how they feel right after peeling off or washing my hands so I usually wait a bit after before playing.
