how do i keep my pinky, and to a lesser extent, other fingers, down close to the strings. my pinky has a great tendency to just fly off, even when i do scales slowly, i cant hold it down. been playing for 18 months. any tips???

I had the same problem and what worked was doing 1-2-3-4 chromatic exercises where you only move one finger at a time and keep the remaining fingers on the fretboard. Its called supportive fingering.

Yeah that exercise has been helping me, I do it everyday for a couple minutes to a metronome. Give it at least a month before you notice results, but be patient it will pay off.

I also started practicing my scales using the supportive fingering...that is a cool way to develop a very efficent fretting hand.

If anyone has any other ideas or comments join on in!

i used to have that problem, but ive been through so many technique changes to find which one helps me the most, and part of it, is when i play, the angle my hand is, whenever i lift my pinky, it naturally only rises up a little bit, it still moves more away from the fretboard than the others, i think thats a natural thing.
