TheDude, if your main reason is the 'hum' or 'buzz' that you get from single coils, a stratocaster can still be an option. Look for strats with pickups labled "Noiseless" or "vintage noisless" I believe theres a "laser noiseless" or something to that extent as well. The signature clapton model (out of your price range, but just for an example) uses noiseless pickups.

3 pickup set is $150 @ Musician's Friend. Not too bad at all. Test before you buy.
I pretty much agree with what's been said before, but I'll add my own little insight.
Both LP style and Strat style guitars can do blues, but they do a very different kind of blues. When I sit down and do blues on the LP, I tend to use the sustain a lot, vibrato a lot, play slower, more melodic lines etc. However, when I play blues on a Strat, I tend to do more of an SRV type thing, more double stops, more slides, more aggressive bends, etc.
Each sound has it's place, and although at the moment I only own an LP, I'd like a strat style guitar to cover the other musical bases.

That $5 guitar - if you scroll down to their other auctions, you'll see a Stratalike for 49.99. Do you see anything odd about the guitar (other than the headstock that's not in the picture?
Maybe that's why it's only 49.99
