Hey, I was talking to the new music store's in my area's owner and I asked him if they had any Peavey Classic 30's, Ive heard lots of good things about this amp and really liked how the Classic 50 sounded when I tried one, so I've been looking into possibly getting one. He said they didn't carry them, and that he prefered the the Marshall amp that Marshall came out with shortly after Peavey came out with the Classics. I didn't have much time, so I didn't really get to talk, what amp was he refering to?
I've recently decided to get a tube amp somewhere around the 400-550 range. The other music store in my area did not have any peavey classic 30's, but ordered one for me, they said I could have it for $438 if i decide to get it, which seems like a great price(they go for $500 on musicians friend without the shipping, which aint cheap for a 40 pound amp). I like to be an informed buyer, so before I go into try out some of the marshall amps at the new place, I'd like to know what I am looking at, any help would be appreciated. Its probally quite similar to a Peavey's Classic 30, Thanks.

Well, I have no idea which amp your Music Store owner was talking about, but the Marshall amp that probably comes closest to the Peavey Classic 30 is thd DSL 401.

Both are all-tube amps. The Classic 30 is 30 watts, the DSL 401 is 40 watts. Myself, I would go for the Classic 30 for 3 reasons.

1) The Peavey Classic 30 is $400 less.
2) The Peavey Classic 30 is only 30 watts. That's actually an advantage. You would be able to crank this amp to saturation at a slightly lower volume level. Believe me, this amp is plenty loud and used by thousands of gigging musicians.
3) The Peavey Classic 30 has a better reputation. While I'm sure the Marshall amp is very good, the Classic 30 has already made a name for itself as a GREAT amp. A very good Clean channel (not Fender clean, but close) and a great Overdrive channel.

This is just a guess. Your Music Shop owner could have been talking about any number of amps. For instance the AVT50 Combo;

Marshall AVT50

The AVT50 is not a "true" tube amp. It has a tube in the pre-amp section that adds warmth and somewhat of a tube tone. But it is a solid-state amp and will not sound the same as an all-tube amp. Still, there is nothing wrong with this. Many of today's hybrid amps sound so close to true tube amps that even "experts" cannot tell the difference.

Go to Harmony Central and read reviews on any amps you are interested in. Look for reviews by experienced musicians. These will give you a good idea of the pros and cons of any amp. Remember- Tone is in the ear of the beholder. One person may say a particular amp is the very best they've ever heard, and the next person may say it's the worst. Try to look at the overall rating.

Try to listen to an amp before you buy. It doesn't matter what your Music Store owner likes. It will be YOUR amp. Make sure YOU like it.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll probably be going with the Peavey Classic 30, especially for only $438 compared to the marshalls. I played a bigger version of this amp (the 50) and really liked the sound, so I'll probably end up with the classic 30. Even if those marshalls did sound better, I'm not looking into spending that much right now.
