I've had my S6 for almost two years. There are a few pick dents around the sound hole from doing percussive type things, and the usual scratches on the pick guard, but that's all.
I think I may remember the Harmony Central review that has you concerned. Some joker complained that the guitar was crap because after only a few months the lower side of his soundhole was actually gouged away and splintered. That guy probably needs to play a Dobro and nothing else.
Play the heck out of it, take reasonable care of it, and don't worry.
I'ed like to get a more conventional mellow/warmer accoustic sound out of it, it's a really bright guitar.
Try different strings?

I have had my S6 for one and a half years. It is my first guitar and I play on average one hour a day. It sits on a stand to be readily accessable. To put it simply I have been more than pleased with it. Does it look like it is used, I hope so. Does it look distressed, not at all.

I have an S6 with a cedar top. When I first got it I noticed it was wearing away between the sound hole and the pick guard as well. I went to a guitar repair store and got a piece of clear pick guard for 50 cents. The hard part was cutting a piece to fit using tracing paper. Once it was in place problem solved. Except when I strum down past the pick guard. But what the heck maybe I'll have a Willie Nelson look a like one day. It sounds too go to worry about, and I'm one of those guys that wants everything perfect with my stuff.
The S6 has taught me about an instrument having the look of character. I've yet to play another acoustic that I felt had a better sound, including the Seagull artist series.

Yeah, it helps a little, but not much. I'm actually using Dean Markley Alchemy's right now, they're a bright string to begin with. I'ed like a warmer more contrasting accoustic sound in addition to what I'm getting now, though.
