I've seen a lot of tab on the internet saying to capo 3. But I found several videos of Tom playing this on YouTube and it looks like he has his capo on the first fret. Does anyone have an official Tom Petty songbook handy? This song is dead easy, but I want to make sure I get it right, and my ears aren't that good yet...

thanks 8)

I always used Capo 3rd fret.

Answer depends on which chords you want to use and which key you want to sing it in. You say you want to "get it right," so I'm assuming you want to play it in the same key as on the record. The original recording is in F, so you can either:

Play E chords (E, Esus4 and B7) with capo on the first fret

Or:

Play D chords (D, Dsus4 and A7) with capo on the third fret

Or you can figure out all sorts of other cool arrangements, like using C chords with a capo on the fifth fret...

Have fun.

Peace

Petty does play it with the capo on the first fret and the chords David's given you for that capo position. What you're seeing on the video is accurate. But as you can see, there's more than one way to skin a cat!
