I don't even think you'll have to loosen the strings. I've applied it with my fingers to the strings and fretboard of a strung guitar, then wiped it off as previously mentioned. Takes a little more work that way, because you have to work the wiping rag in between the strings and fretboard, but it's not hard to do.
