Mike,
if you go to a place like Warmoth and add up the cost of buying ALL the parts needed for a complete Strat, you'll find it costs more than buying a new Fender (US Strat, that is).
Alder body $160
Painting body white $185
Neck $157
Corian nut $25
Neck finish - satin $75
Pickguard $22
Fender Std bridge $80
Tuners (Schaller locking) $48
Knobs, switches, etc. $60
Pickups $160
Total $972 (and that's without factoring any labour into the job)
US Strat from MF - $950.
The things that I selected are the cheapest that Warmoth offer, other than the pickups, which is the price I've seen asked for a set of Fender pups on several occasions.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?
