The slot in the handles of all the winders I've tried so far don't fit between the balls on top of the pegs to pull them out for restringing. It's a Yamaha acoustic. Do they come in different sizes?

i usually use a pair of wire "nippers" and a rag and pry them out, or a pair of pliers and a rag.

I have a yamaha and my pins are a royal pain. I use the plyers and rag mentioned above, but it takes some wrestling.

If the pins are too big for the slot, take a rattail file and widen it slightly.

I use a dull pair of end nippers to pull my pins, you gotta be careful and don't squeeze too tightly.

Alternative method is to loosen the strings enough to reach your hand in the sound hole and push them out from the inside.

When you reinstall the pins you shouldn't have to push them in tightly, they are only supposed to hold the ball end against the reinforcement plate inside the guitar. Some times a light coat of chalk helps to make it easier pulling the pins.

Pushing them out from the inside is the easy way. You may want to hold a coin over the tip of your finger as you push the peg to protect your fingertip if you have to push hard.

Edit.

Take the rattail file to the rewinding crank slot.

That'll work if you remove them all the strings at once; I like to remove, replace, and tune one string at a time. It's not the slot in the winder handle that don't fit the peg, it's the sides of the handle being to wide to fit between the adjacent peg(s). I tried filing down the sides of the handle, that just made it to weak and the handle split. I may try to file the sides of the round heads of the pegs to a more oval shape. Now that I'm thinking about it, I may invent a new tool for this. I know of a tool that might work with modifications. I'll get back with it. How can I post photos here?

Same way as posting photos on any board. You put them somewhere that hosts pics. I use: http://photobucket.com/ (There are lots of other choices, including the free Web hosting your ISP probably provides.) Then you copy the URL and paste it into your message here, with img in square brackets right in front of it and /img in square brackets right after it. Voila, your picture shows up!

Thanks, but all the other non music related boards I belong to have a browse button to download photos without using a 3rd party.

lucky them eh?
using free image hosting sites to post pics are the norm in most forums in my experiance, bandwidth/storage space costs money. we're actually pretty lucky with all the cool stuff GN provides free.

Yeah, there are only a few other boards I've seen that allow uploading pictures directly. I don't like it, either. Having a pic in one place that you can post a reference to is a lot handier. Usually boards that allow uploading have strict requirements as to maximum picture dimensions and file size, too, and they vary from place to place.

At any rate, this one doesn't allow uploading, and I doubt it ever will.

Guitar.com allows uploading, but it's a pretty unfriendly, harsh place.

Guitarists.net has uploading. It's nicer. Different focus from Guitar Noise, which is learning centered. There's no other board quite like it.

On the others, I have to put up with a lot of ads; so I guess it's give some to get some. I already did my avatar, so how hard can it be!
