Your keyboard isn't storing music, just digital instructions. These instructions are "realized" in real time by running the data through the circuits on playback.

Recording from devices like that, whether it's a keyboard or composition software, depends on the amount of memory available. I'd probably try sending just the rhythms to one track for best results.

How to get from your keyboard to the recording unit depends on your keyboard. The boss unit has a lot of input options - your limitation is probably on what kind of outputs your keyboard has. The more expensive keyboards (often labeled "workstations") usually have an S/PDIF (Sony/Phillips Digital Interface) - you'd hook that up with a coax cable to the S/PDIF input - that's the one marked "Digital IN" on the Boss unit. That'll let you send 16 or 24 bit digital sound.

Cheaper keyboards have only a MIDI out, or a MIDI and line out. If you only have MIDI out, your only option is to mic it and record that way; if you have a line out, check your manuals for the output impedances to see if the load is compatible with the inputs on the Boss (22 Ohm for jacks 1-8 on the back, 1000 Ohms for the guitar/bass input on the front).

These are too low for input impedances. I would expect line in to be 1000 to 10k ohms, and a guitar/base input to be at least 500k ohm and closer to 1M ohm on a good machine. Even 100k ohm for a guitar would be too low.

Absolutely right, Greg - those numbers are both kilo-ohms (stupid me, I left off the ks). So that's 1,000,000 for the guitar, and 22,000 for the line.

Wow, redstrat, you really pulled one out of the history books as this thread was originally posted in 2003. Welcome aboard, nice to have you here.

It is a small world for metal fanatics. I welcome you fellow musicians, especially the metalheads!
