There are different types of line amps. The type of line amp you maybe asking about are is used to keep the signal coming down the cable at a certain voltage, so there is no signal lose and it remains clean without picking up any noise. They may very well look like those splitters one would use to split cable tv signal, even some of them can boost the signal if the line was run for a long distance.
