Anyone familiar with Tech 21 Trademark amps?

Yes, it allows you to get more tube OD (so tube compression, richer harmonics, longer sustain etc) without the lame volume. As for the BJ NOS, why not go for a new cab instead? You'll get the same sonical difference for way less money.

The other way to go is simply replace the stock speaker with whatever flavor speaker you like, rather than spending a couple hundred on a good cabinet plus speaker. A little care and about 15-20 minutes with a screwdriver should do the trick..just make sure to buy a speaker with the same ohm-value and note the polarity of the original speaker wiring and attach the wires to the new speaker the same way. This also gives you the advantage of not only having an emergency spare, but also being able to put the stock speaker back in the amp if you decide to sell it, and having that speaker available to put into another amp. I'm curious why is it that you don't see the Tri A.C. as part of your solution. After all it is the pre-amp circuit that all their combos utilize. Except there's 3 programmable switches, isn't that more flexible than their combos?

Anywho, since you are interested in Tech21 tones why not buy something like a powered stage monitor or simply a PowerEngine?
One of the cool things about the Tri pre-amp is you get a physical affects loop.

I stumbled on a way to improve tone when in front of an amp or for that matter period. I was trying a few tone caps on my SC axe. My Tri turns on with a cranked Brit setting, I swept the full range of the tone pot. Low and behold, just before the point at which tone goes dark then vol drops out there was this jangle without the piercing hi's! The 1st true clean tone I ever got from this thing. Better still as I roll the tone back up, the break-up, grind then sizzle all sound great. The tone is like a vol or gain control. Not the same as the volume, it's like a tone knob on a vintage single tone amp. At 4 your clean and warm, go past noon and the gain picks up. Oh joy.
So, a sweet clean Brit sound, the same goes for hi gain California. It's an odd set-up on the git now, if I were to bypass the unit I get no sound unless I go back to normal tone pot setting. I get best clean tone with the pup vols down a little too.
