Any opinions? I'm leaning toward the Big Muff....
I have never used the Boss DS-1, but I believe it gives you the sound of an overdriven tube amp, or a Blues type overdrive.
The Big Muff is an altogether different sound. It imitates the early "fuzz boxes" of the 60's. This was a pedal used by Hendrix. It is a very "dry" distortion for want of a better term.
So, I think the best way to describe them would be the Boss DS-1 is thick and creamy, the Big Muff is harsher, with far more distortion and fuzz.
Sorry, the only way I could think to describe them. They sound like soft drinks. :D
If you know something better than Rock and Roll, I'd like to hear it - Jerry Lee Lewis
So.... Are you saying that the DS-1 is sort of like a red cream soda and the Big Muff is more like, say, ginger ale that got shaken up before you opened it?
I'm not sure this is helping me make a decision.
EDIT: I woke up this morning realizing that what I want is something that sounds like Birch Beer, but I think I need humbuckers for that.
I have a custom built 1 watt tube amp that has a Big Muff circut as the tone stack. It's an awsome little cridder when pushing a open back 2x12 cabinet.

Joe -
Is that that Bumbox Fuzzwuzz I seem to recall you talking about? I've got a Bumbox Sally that I run into a closed back 1x10 with an Eminence Rajin' Cajun. I like it, though unless the kids are asleep I tend to end up using the line out to drive my Fender Frontman 25R with it acting as a pre-amp. Either amp, alone, isn't quite what I'm after but together they seem to really work great - the Sally gives the Frontman warmth and the Frontman adds some presence that I'm not getting out of the Sally.
I ended up getting the Big Muff and when I put it in front of the Sally it does sound sweet, without the Frontman in the mix. They really do seem to compliment each other.
Yes, Great workmanship went into those amps. They really work and sound nice. I don't use it very much being I have a setup right now that does the trick until I decide to make some equipment change outs.

I never liked the DS1, but maybe that is because they are supposedly to be used through a tube amp. In front of a solid state amp the distortion is grainy and harsh. The muff is much different and how much you like it depends on how much you like fuzz. 8)
