i am about to buy myself a new 100w amp head, and i currently own a combo so i do not have a cabinet. the head will put me out of money for a while, but my friend has a small 60w cab that he said hell let me borrow, my question is if i play at a low volume will it still blow the speaker?
Keep the volume down and it'll be fine.

Reasonable volume is OK! It's not the average "noise" that will cause you grief, the speaker is designed to handle it. Like vampires, it's the spikes that get you. Get one big enough and it'll tear a hole through the heart of your speaker.
I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

This isn't a problem for guitar cabs, but if you're looking at speakers that have woofers and tweeters in them, running a lower powered amp and cranking it way up will blow the tweeters. Driving an amp into clipping puts more of the power into the higher frequencies that get shifted to the tweeters by the crossover. I've seen that happen more than once with folks using home stereo systems as improvised PAs at a party.
