can you chain effects together? and have multiple ones goin at the same time?

Yes, definitely. Each pedal changes the sound it gets send in and sends the processed sound out. You can then send this processed sound into the amp, or into another effect etc.

This is whats known as a signal chain. Example could be something like this.
Guitar-> equalizer-> distortion->equalizer-> chorus-> flanger-> guitar amp.
The idea on that quest for tone is to find the right combination of effects to create a signal chain that will set your sound apart from everyone else's.
