I was drooling over some super-cool HRD's on a site. I guess Fender had limited production runs of souped up HRD's. One was a gorgeous wood cabinet with a special speaker. Oddly, one of my HRD's was a special run in '03.

The site says there was a Brown tolex version with a Jensen C12N (ceramic magnet) while my amp (Lacquered Tweed Hot Rod) has a Jensen P12N (alnico magnet).

What's the difference? How do they sound different than one another. Now, to complicate things even more, in my black HRD it has a Weber Texas Special. Would that be as "good" as the other two?

Since I recently joined another band I just bought another full set of tubes for my black amp and am thinking of maybe getting another "better" speaker for it. After it's biased and all, that is.

The C12N has a sweet midrange and great dynamic response. The P12N vintage tone for either clean and distortion, used mainly for lead. Here's the spec's of both. Which is why they sound difference.

C12N ..Frequency Response 70Hz -6kHz
Magnet .. Ferrite
Resonant Frequency (fs) 112 Hz
Impedance (Re) 6.5 ohms
Coil Inductance (Le) .9mH
Electromagnetic Q (Qes) 1.05
Mechanical Q (Qms) 7.01
Total Q (Qts) 0.92
Compliance Equiv. Vol. (Vas) 27.6 Liters/.97cu. ft.

P12N ..Frequency Response 60Hz -8kHz
Magnet .. Alnico
Resonant Frequency (fs) 90 Hz
Impedance (Re) 6.2 ohms
Coil Inductance (Le) .58mH
Electromagnetic Q (Qes) .82
Mechanical Q (Qms) 5.72
Total Q (Qts) .72
Comp. Equiv. Vol. (Vas) 40.2 Liters/1.42cu. ft.

Hope this Helps.

Joe

So, I guess if you had two identical HRD's except for speakers - one with the C12N, you'd use that for rythym and the one with P12N for leads. Perhaps using an A/B pedal to switch between.

Joe, thanks for stoppin' in on this one. Well, since I'm just a rhythm player, I guess the choice is obvious. Besides, I love midrange.

On the Unofficial Hot Rod Deluxe Owners site you can find some sound clips of these speakers. I was not too impressed with the Jensen speakers, but that is me, listen for yourself and see what you think.

Just my 2 cents, but if you really want a sweet speaker, pick up a 2 X 12 extension cab with Celestion Vintage 30's. This is an awesome speaker, famous.

I have recommended Avatar many times. But they do make great cabs for a great price. Plus you can get the black tolex with silver grille to match your amp perfect.

Avatar Speaker Cabs

Check out the G212H DUAL VINTAGE 30. Get this cab at 8 ohms and you can run it with your Texas Special, or use the extension cab alone.
