Actually Grey my radio time is about 10 min/month if that. Haven't listened to the radio in years the only time I do is when I dont have a CD in the car.

Though John Peel didn't always like the records he played, he played them because he thought they deserved a chance.
Thst is exactly the point. John Peel decided what deserved to be heard on his show - not what the sponsor wanted to be pushed.

Radio1 is state sponsored, but still manages to be anything but independent. When I was a teenager, we had the treat of listening to "pirate radio" - Radio Caroline, set up to get around the music industry's demands of what to play and when.

I suppose I was really getting at the fact that John Peel occassionally said things very similar to Alan's quote, "I don't like this record but I'm going to play it". Funnily the pirate stations were mostly very commercial, just less prescribed than official stations. Supposedly the perfumed garden was born from the fact that no-one knew what JP was doing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Perfumed_Garden_%28radio_show%29 (I guess most people here know this, I just like the story, and of course a long time ago that turned into Radio 1.)
