So we'll be seeing you on the TV soon then, Ric? 99% of today's music wouldn't dare aspire to such lofty heights.....

Depends on whether I attain it, I suppose.

It hasn't stopped those that have gone before you as Vic rightly points out.

This is a fun topic!

For me, it's not so much talking about guitar or guitar related things, but more than once I've found myself adding my side into a conversation starting with "...well, it's like in music--" or "...it's like being a touring musician...."

And the subject could've been anything at all.

Things, topics of conversation, ideas - they most times trigger some musical or performance or music related experience I've had or mulled over in the past; almost like the 'philosophy of being a musician' can (and does) cover a lot of basic concepts - or at least relates to them.

My wife also shares this outlook I guess you could say. We were in the same band for years before we got married and had her own musical upbringing years before that, so between us there's just this 'understanding' about attitudes, focus, experience vs theory, stuff like that.

And as for me, strangely or not, Keith Richard even more often comes up as tie-in to subjects other people are conversing about. I don't know how that works, but it's always "...Well, Keith you know...."

It's funny in a way, but probably irritating to most people.

On the other hand Keef, having been around the world several more times than he remembers...I don't think it's part of his world and he wouldn't really care what folks had to say about butting into conversations saying 'Well, it's just six across and twelve up'.....

It just slips in there ;)

and I've heard you play slide, and I aspire to that level of mediocrity......

shut up, and play more guitar!

Joking mate......but in all honesty, your slide playing is nothing to be ashamed of....hell, I'd be proud of that standard. Maybe if you set your sights a bit higher, who knows? I think you've got a real feel for the blues, and a love for the blues, and a love of playing the blues....how can you go wrong?

Keep on keepin' on Ric - you got SOUL, man!

:D :D :D

Hey, OT, but we should have a blues jam - not the most original of ideas I know - but have in ONLY slide/steel playing.

Call it the GuitarNoise Great Slide Off (the edge)

The great thing about "Mediocre" is that it's a very large bus - with seats for a very wide range of abilities. The passengers might get a bit rowdy at times - but we do enjoy ourselves. :D We might like to make faces out of the back window at those flash b*ggers in the sports cars that pass by, and think "that will be me one day..." (even if we don't really always believe ourselves), but the Mediocre Bus is a friendly place with lots of good company.

I'm still enjoying the ride and the sing-alongs - so I'm in not really in a hurry to get off the bus and into the Elite Player sports car... :P

Cheers,

Chris

Thanks, Vic!

I've kind of gone through a dry spell lately where other things in life have distracted me and I haven't been playing very much. I've been getting the itch bad and getting back into it the last few days, but still am overloaded. When I get a few things cleared out (especially getting my son's new Mac Book loaded up with all of his software and music and forwarded on to him in New York!) I'm going to be heating up the strings with that slide! What really gets me fired up is putting in my iPod and listening to stuff that really inspires me. Like Johnny Farmer's Wrong Doers Respect Me. Man, that just gets me going! And I was listening to some Junior Kimbrough stuff and got the burning desire to break out my boy's electric sitar/guitar, tune it to Open E and slide on it. Just haven't been able to do it yet, but I think that would be killer for the kind of stuff Kimbrough did and The Black Keys emulated from him. (Takes a while tuning all those drone strings, though!) Now that we've suddenly been plunged more or less into empty nesthood, I've got the basement with my boy's guitars and amps to keep exercised now and then until he gets into stable quarters where he can keep and use them. What a problem.
