I was just thinking about this the other day - not so long ago people turned their noses up at 70s Fenders (mainly because of CBS I suspect) and yet now they're really collectable.

It was because the engineering and quality took a sharp nosedive when CBS took over design and production. CBS introduced a number of "innovative" new features, and also attempted to complete and implement some of Leo's unfinished ideas. Many of these came off quite badly.

Similar things happened to Gibson under Norlin.

True of the early 70s examples - but I've owned both a '58 and my present '78, and I can honeslty say I prefer the latter. Oh it has its oddities (that 3-bolt neck plate) but it sounds wonderful and plays like butter. It also has a nice habit of staying in tune ;-)

I couldn't care less about trends, I buy based purely on sound and playability, of-course aesthetics are a factor but only what I like, the current "in" style never affects my choice.
I have currently own two Ibanez's, next comes the Gibson SG, and a little while later I plan on buying a 1968 left-handed, white Fender Stratocaster. I am going to put thicker gauge strings on it upside-down so I can play it right-handed and hopefully put in a Texas Special single-coil pickup at the bridge.

Nick coming back into style got a chuckly out of me. Nick, do you still have a slew of guitars? If so, I guess some will always be in style for the current fashion.

I was hoping Nick would come up with a witty retort to that. Knowing Nick he probably has no less than 20 guitars at any one time. Although agggggggggges ago after posting a picture of his many guitars he said he was down sizing the collection.

I feel a new thread coming on....

'78 isn't quite vintage yet, is it!.

Yes, it was mostly very late 60's to mid 70's models that suffered. But even among those, there are a few examples of good -- and certainly beloved -- ones.

I have an early ('82?) G&L with a 3-bolt Micro-tilt neck. It too works very well and rarely goes out of tune. It's my tried and true favorite.
