Last week, my oldest turned 16 (and got his driver's license  ). Anyway, his party was Saturday and he and I jammed through a couple of White Stripes songs (him on drums, me on guitar) at the beginning of the party. I had to go to my youngest son's baseball game and when I got back, a couple other kids had brought their guitars. They both just blew me away. I basically sat there with my guitar in hand, watching them play Dream Theater, Coheed & Cambria, Pantera, etc. Pretty much the only thing I played with them was Rush's version of "Summertime Blues" and "Cygnus X-1".
To make it even more humbling, one of the kids that was playing so well is the drummer in my son's band, and he's a better drummer than he is guitarist.
Well, you can borrow my excuse. I just tell myself that them young kids have nothing better to do than play guitar over and over again. No responsibilites, wives, children, jobs, etc.. then I throw back a few beverages and play my guitar and dream that I am young again... :)
It doesnt really help, but there isnt anything I can do about it either. hehe.. Not to say that I dont enjoy the fact that my son has progressed so far on his bass.. but I do get a little envious too.

I look at it like this, you have the opportunity to jam with your son. That, in and of itself, is a great thing. Forget how good his friends can play. That really would not fit into the equation for me. I would enjoy jamming with my kid for everthing that its worth.
