Good job, Nick, keeping it off!
My doctor, who is not a young man (nearing retirement age), continued to ride 20 miles every day when it was near 100 degrees here. I believe he must have a death wish. :?
What's your plan for exercise once the weather isn't conducive to bicycling?

I haven't followed this thread in months. I didn't bother to go back and read the whole thing. I hope everyone is nearing their goals.
Visited the doctor last week. I'm at 292. I play fastpitch baseball (not softball) and have arthritis in knees and ankles. I play Sundays, limp until the next Sunday and play again. Despite everything, I'm having a decent season as it is a young mans game and I'm an old man.
Anyhoo, the good doc sez that I gotta drop 100 before next season and hope that the less weight will ease the joint pain and swelling. If I fail to lose, I gotta hang up the spikes. If I do lose and the joints feel better, I can play for a few more years.
So, there's my inspiration. It might sound shallow, but tell David Hodge he can't play guitar again and see his reaction. Baseball is like that for me.

Oh, it will. But start slow and easy. Don't push yourself beyond what the current joint status can take, cause it will kill your whole program and you'll be back to square one, or worse.
I have osteoarthritis in my knees, diagnosed several years ago when I dove into an aerobics class full tilt. Too much side-to-side motion and I ended up on crutches in a lot of pain, both knees a mess.
And previously, I did a walking program of an hour on alternate days, and still had a fair bit of knee pain. Needed the day in between for them to recover. It made walking a dread and a chore.
This time around, I took somebody's advice and started with 30 minutes every day instead. Much better on my knees, no dreading the exercise, and sticking to it as a result. As I've taken off weight, I've increased the speed, distance and time, always using soreness as a flag that I'd done a little too much.
Good luck, rparker! Get started and keep us posted how it's going!

I seemed to have plateaued, but I've been slacking a bit. Back at it tomorrow.
rparker, may I suggest you use elliptical machines. More intense cardio work out and way easier on the knee's.
Hey, peeps. It's been pretty quiet around here. Anybody care to report in?
RParker, did you get started on a program yet? Thinking about next summer's fastpitch season?
David, do I recall your resolving something about "50 by 50"??
We are motivated, right? Better health for better living (I think it was a 4-H slogan or some such). :D

I've been riding all this week. Last week was spent at Disney in Florida and every meal came with desert, even breakfast. The good news is that with walking 7-8 miles a day in the 90 degree heat in the theme parks I didn't gain anything.
So back at it. I'm still shooting for my goal by December 19th.

 Why do they DO that?!?!

Good job, Nick!
I've gotten another 4 lbs off, so I'm calling it a total of 35 gone since early this year.
Who else out there is still with us? Sin City Sid, Violet, Corbind....?? Anybody else?

Riding my bike every other day and watching what I eat. 4 down, 96 to go. Doubt I'll be ready by Spring training, but there's the year after and beyond......

Good job! You're 4% of the way to your goal. Keep it up and suddenly you'll find yourself at 10%, then 15%, etc..... :D

Today is eight weeks after my birthday and I've lost nine pounds so far. It's far from encouraging because everything happens seemingly so slowly and I find myself giving myself the same lecture I give to people when they're frustrated by what they think of as slow progress with their guitar playing.
Thanks, Margaret, for needling me. I truly appreciate it and I obviously need it as well. And thanks to Nick for being such an inspiration. When you see it happen with someone, it's much more encouraging than hearing about it.
Peace

Well that's excellent then!! If fifty pounds is your goal (am I remembering that number correctly?), you're practically 20% of the way there. Nothing to sneeze at.

Wow I just discovered this thread, although I have to confess I haven't read the whole thing.
Congrats to everyone who's been shedding those pounds. At 5ft tall I'm considered over weight for my height and I've been making an effort to lose some of that extra poundage.
I gave up drinking diet coke, which was about all I ever drank and drank waaaaaaaaay too much of it at that. I don't eat after a certain point at nightand I always make sure I have breakfast in the morning which is something I could never face. And for exercise I have a stereo and my dancing feet.
All in all in the past 6 months I've lost a grand total of 22lbs, I want to lose another 10lbs or so and I'll be happy.
I recently brought a pair of size 12 jeans, which I'm really happy about...well untill my boys got paint all over them, then I wasn't so happy.

And would you care to share your selfish motives as inspiration for other tubbies like me? I'm needing something here besides another donut. I walk around the treadmill now instead of on it.

You could always bribe yourself with new guitars...
Lose 5lbs = New Strings
Lose 10lbs = Some top notch pick ups
Lose 15lbs = Brand new Acoustic
Lose 20lbs = That niffty Les Paul on Ebay
It's win win, you lose weight and get stuff!! How's that for motivation?

Hmmm what color is the LP? :)
I put a box of donuts on the treadmill controller the other day, as a motivator. I found that if I don't turn the mill on, I get there sooner. (I'm just kidding) I'll go away now.
