Sorry, Greybeard, got to argue the toss with you over that one...."Incosiderate Fools?" I have tried to give up hundreds of times....always go back - but I never smoke near my grandkids, unlike their mother......and I think a litlle cigarette smoke (passive smoking) is small beer indeed when compared to the pollutants put out by petrol engines every day.....
We smokers are an endangered species these days......there aren't many of us left....the Mrs asks me why I can't give up, I say "because I enjoy it"....
When I was a kid, it was cool to smoke.....
When I was a Teenager, you weren't cool uinless you smoked!!!
As a mature responsible adult with kids, I can honesty say I never blew smoke in any of my kids faces....they all smoke....
Now I'll be 50 in a year or so, I'd love to give up....purely from a financial point of view....
But I do object to the view held by non-smokers that all smokers are irresponsible, there were no government health warnings on cig packets when I started smoking.....there have been plenty since in the last 30 years, but I was already hooked......
And without the tax revenue from cigarettes, the NHS would fold tomorrow....never mind they'd save a couple of Billion quid every year on hospital care for smoking-related diseases, what about the 90 Billion they'd lose every year in Tax?....what the hell do you think is paying for the NHS anyway?
Sorry if I see to be ranting, but us smokers, car-owners and drinkers pay about 90% of this country's indirect taxes.....
And it's times like this, when people get on the back of us smokers, I NEED A CIG....
:D :D :D

And as an addendum.....our (British) governent was not elected on a mandate of smoking or non-smoking, the government was elected to carry out the wishes of the people....and most people are agaainst a smoking ban, a referendum would prove that....there are far more important issues, too many to even start listing here....
The government wants a total ban on smoking in public.....there are thousands of bars and clubs in this country which non-smokers will go into and enjoy a night out, and not whinge, whine or complain....because they know beforehand that there are going to be smokers in there....
How many people do you think, if smoking is banned in pubs, will stop going out and have a drink and a smoke at home? And how much more revenue will be lost? More to the point, how much goodwill?
A smoking ban would close half the pubs in this country down inside 2 years.....and once they're gone, they'll never come back.....
Smoking is on the increase amongst teenagers aged 13-16.....in a couple of years time, those teenagers won't be able to go out and have a social evening,,,,there'll be nowhere for them to go.....
We're in the middle of "Nanny State gone mad" and "We know what's good for you....".....
BS!!!!!

NYC banned smoking in public places. Works fine.
This isn't a thread about whether smokers are irresponsible or not though, and I bet if this goes on, it'll end up getting locked or something like that.
Now, welcome back lotto, I didn't know you, but I'm glad your back anyways!
Point taken Taso, but I just wanted to make my point...we smokers aren't responsible for all the ills of the world, so stop blaming us.....when Pandora's box was opened, I'll bet anyone a fiver it didn't reveal a little guy puffing on a B&H.....
Sorry if I offended anyone, but we're all entitled to our opinions, and I've stated mine....

I'll make one reply to you, Vic, then leave further discussion to others.
Smokers, in general, do not consider the effects that their smoke is having on others - that is being inconsiderate.
Many smokers, when visiting a non-smoker's home, do not even bother to ask if the host minds them smoking - that is inconsiderate, to the point of rudeness.
The stench that their tobacco smoke leaves behind, not just on the surroundings, but on the clothes of everyone in the room, doen't bother smokers one iota - that's inconsiderate.
Having been a smoker, who gave up, I do consider smokers foolish.
When I was a kid, it was cool to smoke.....
When I was a Teenager, you weren't cool uinless you smoked!!!
I was one of those and, no, there were no health warnings when I started smoking either - in fact, there weren't any when I gave up. I was 21 when I gave up. I'd been smoking for about 10 years - now THAT was stupid.
As far as the health service is concerned, how many fewer chronically ill patients would they have to deal with every year, if none of them smoked? Don't forget that illness created by smoking is not like a cold, it doesn't go away in a few days - it tends to stay with you for life - and results in enormous - and ongoing - cost to the health service.
and I think a litlle cigarette smoke (passive smoking) is small beer indeed when compared to the pollutants put out by petrol engines every day.....
Sorry, but I'll take issue with you on that. Yes, cars do put out noxious gases - but directly into the atmosphere, where they are diluted by the movement of a large body of air. They have a far greater effect on the health of the earth than the individuals, nearby. Cigarette smokers, on the other hand, put their noxious gases into an enclosed space, where they can't be diluted by a large body of moving air and so have a direct impact on those in the immediate vicinity of the smoker.
Sorry, Vic, you'll never convince me - I'm a dyed-in-the-wool, card-carrying, born-again non-smoker.
I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?
