After working on For Whom The Bell Tolls by Metallica, I've come across different tabs and even a Wikipedia entry that says their guitars are tuned up half a step. Now, my intuition tells me that if I tune too far up from standard I'm going to be hurting (one, for more strings, and two from whatever flingback hits me). It doesn't even seem worth it to me to try since playing in standard seems sufficient enough and true to the sound. However, I did want to ask if anyone actually plays like this and if there's a tried and true way of doing it. Just curious, not a big deal, but input would be appreciated.

Newtone "Electric Masters" are the only guitar strings I've heard of that tune to pitch with less tension, due to their core design. Presumably they tune up, without too much additional tension, structural stress, stretching or breaking.

Similarly, Newtone designed Drop D strings for lower tunings, at reasonable, comfortable normal tension and feel. I haven't tried 'em.
I have played guitar tuned up a half step with regular strings and it doesn't feel particularly good, but you make adjustments.

yeah. I agree with S. on this.
it sounds unusual for metal players to tune UP.
a capo can give you a raise up easily, but wild bends could be problematic.

Okay, that's reasonable enough. I think it sounds fine anyway but I'll try it with a capo.
There's a section where Kirk plays this little riff over the intro -

and it definitely sounds truer to the song when I move everything up a fret (no opens to worry about, so i don't need the capo or an uptune)
