I have been longing to learn "Crazy Mama" by J. J. Cale, ever since I first heard it, so I thought I'd look up the tab on the internet and give it a go.
I have found that its in open F, but every time I try to tune to this I always seem to break strings.
Its tuned if I'm right to F/C/F/A/F the strings I'm breaking are the first and fifth or high E and A in normal tuning.
I'm also slightly concerned about how long I could leave a guitar in this tuning before it causes irreperable strain damage to the neck
For those of you who don't know it you can watch here http://www.videocodezone.com/videos/j/jj_cale/crazy_mama.html

Have you tried tuning to open-E and put a capo on the first fret?

Well Steinar,
to be honest that option hadn't occured to me. I'll give it a go. Thanks

A friend of mine commonly tunes to Open F as the normal Vastapol Open D/E pattern in F. I think he uses a set of 11s to do that.

After watching the video again it sounds as though there is a wah being used on the slide parts.
Or is it just my ears decieving me ???

No, your ears are telling the truth - that is a wah on the slide parts... 8)
