Okay folks, I've had this rhythm for about a week now. The verses all follow the same pattern. Just your basic 12 bar blues pretty much. If you know your blues you can see I did some copious borrowing.(music wise) I learned the train whistle trick from Hubert Sumlin, and the D7 one comes from Muddy Waters. Hopefully, the rhythm and strumming will suggest an old fashioned steam train picking up speed. It's the same strum pattern all the way through. Probably not my best work lyric wise. But I'm going with this for now. Have fun.

Another Damn Train Song.

Intro: Train Whistle lick, Fret the 2nd string at the second fret, 1st string at the 3rd fret. Play it as a double stop, and do a 1/4 step bend on both strings. First time bring the bend back down slowly, play twice more fairly quickly. (make it go whoooo, whoo whoo)

Form a D7 chord, on the third and fourth frets Play those three strings sliding the chord down (towards the headstock) one fret each time till you hit the D7. (dun, dun, dun) Then switch to the A7 Strum down once, let ring for about 2 beats and then start in with
12 bar A7 D7 E7 DDUUD Slowly.
12 Bar again same way, but kick the tempo up to (medium)

(A7)Some folks think I'm crazy.
(D7)Others think I'm in(A7)sane.
(A7)Some folks think I'm crazy.
(D7)Others think I'm in(A7)sane.

(E7)Cause I wake up (D7)screaming your (A7)name.(E7)(A7)

I'm headed to the freight yard.
Looking for a fast moving train.
I'm headed to the freight yard.
Looking for a fast moving train.

I'm leaving your memory and the pain.

I gave you everything, baby
You still wouldn't treat me right
I gave you everything, baby
You still wouldn't treat me right.

So, I'm hopping on that coal burner tonight.

I'm leavin this ol' town
Ain't never coming back.
I'm leavin this ol' town
Ain't never coming back.

Gonna ride this train till I run out of track.

Spoken: Let's get outta here. (Pick up the tempo a bit)

A7 D7 E7 (one full 12 bar with turnaround)

Spoken: Pour some coal on. (As fast as you can cleanly go)

(Two full 12 bars and fade)

Nice job, TF.... I like the train whistle, and the descending 7ths... does have that rhythm of a train picking up speed....

As for the lyrics, I like them....blues isn't about what you say, it's the way you say it....

Good job...

:D :D :D

Thanks Vic. :D I'm really happy with that intro and the overall rhythm.

I think I will do this one acoustically, maybe in open D and throw in some slide guitar. I,m also working on one of my acoustic numbers so that would work out just fine.I can record them at the same time. Mine is about fast cars and moonshine 8) 8) 8) --the dog

Hey Twisted,

Very nice. It may not be your lyrical high water mark, but there are still some great lines like:
So, I'm hopping on that coal burner tonight.
and
Gonna ride this train till I run out of track.

And the lyrics fit the tone of the song.

I have a couple of suggestions, but first just be aware that I'm not blues. I don't really listen to the blues, and I don't really get 'em, so if my ideas contradict some unwritten blues code of ethics, then just ignore them.

I think the first verse would make a good chorus... something to come back to a couple more times (or maybe even just once more at the end).

If you did go that root, though, I'd change it a bit so that the second line differs from the first (my reason being that if you're going to repeat it throughout the song, you don't want it to repeat itself).

I'm guessing there will be some solo work in the song too? Hope we can hear it someday.

SP,

Thanks for the comments. I think I agree with you about the first verse being a chorus. May have to do some rewriting here. :D

Oh yeah, If you play along, I left plenty of room for a second guitar to do some soloing etc. Taking the last two songs to my buddy's next time we jam, and see what he can add to them.

My goal is to have a decent mic and start recording some of these by the end of the year. Then I can really torture you folks. :D

My main goal was to get a playable set of chords and strumming that would give the listener the feel of an old steam engine rolling. To be honest, I think I accomplished that fairly well. (enough tooting my own horn now)

This is a verse of a song I wrote with a train Theme a while back.

YOU MAKE MY LIFE HARD BABE
YOU CAUSE MY SO MUCH PAIN
YOU MAKE MY LIFE HARD BABE
YOU CAUSE ME SO MUCH PAIN
WHEN I SEE THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL
IT'S A DAMNED OLD FRIEGHT TRAIN

another line i think I heard from a NPR interview ( A musician was talking about getting back to new Orleans ASAP--" I'll be on the first thing smokin"
