I'm suffering from either a complete lack of inspiration or sheer laziness this week, but I could not seem to come up with somthing for this topic. I am posting somthing I wrote a few years ago as it kind of fits the theme and I'd like to get some feedback on it anyway. By way of explanation, my first husband is buried at Wood National cemetery, which is just outside of Milwaukee, pretty much right across the steet from the Brewers' Stadium.

Driving to Milwaukee
My teenaged son and I
Fighting over the radio
Watching cows go by
Rolling down the windows
Trying to catch a breeze
Stopping by the roadside
For some fine Wisconsin cheese.

In the shadow of the stadium
We smell your favorite brew
The irony is never lost,
We know we will find you
I watch my son through blurry eyes
As he counts along the rows
And it breaks my heart
As he stands and cries
When he finds the one he knows.

When you woke up dead that morning,
Did your life flash before your eyes?
Were you lying with me in a lovers embrace,
Or in the jungle with all of these guys?
If I were a wagering woman,
I know what the answer would be
You spent more time with all these ghosts
Than you ever did with me.

So I collect my only son
And he just keeps asking "why?"
And I try to give him comfort,
As the miles keep rolling by
We use up all the Kleenex
As the state line draws up near
I always feel just a little bit better
With Milwaukee in the rearview mirror.

Wow, that was awsome.

I love the imagery in your song. Got lost at the stadium bit where you start touching on where you are going but I soon figured it out a bit, and even more so when I read the explaination.

I could even hear music in this one, which is rare for me

Thanks
Geoo

Very nice Kat. As a vet myself that hits all too close to home. Like geoo I could even get the rhythm from reading. Excellent lyrics, nice meter. Good work here.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming -- "WOW--What a Ride!"

Hi katreich,
that song just blew me away. This line here:
When he finds the one he knows. is just awsome, cos you can see it on peoples faces, when they try to control the grief, and then that thought or emotion that recognition of the lost one, and in that instant, as you say "they find the one they know". Just a great way of saying it. Well done :D .

Totally agree PB. That is what I was thinking when I read it as well. When I visit my moms grave site, we'll often walk down the row of head stone and you can tell when someone finds it just by looking at their face.

That's great, Kat. My favorite line is this one:
When you woke up dead that morning,

Though it's definitely in good company with all the rest. Great.
