Y12W51 A Perfect World

http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12946525

I would be a perfect boy and you a perfect girl
In a perfect world
In a perfect world
You’d be waiting on the beach wearing a string of pearls
In a perfect world
In a perfect world

But I’m not a perfect boy
And it’s not a perfect world

We would have a perfect child with kind eyes and curls
In a perfect world
In a perfect world
Your porcelain skin would not have burned in kimono swirls
In a perfect world
In a perfect world

But down dropped the little boy
And it’s not a perfect world
And I’m stationed in Hanoi
And it’s not a perfect world

I would be a perfect boy and you a perfect girl
In a perfect world
In a perfect world

Like this a lot.

You have a tremendous gift of narration, James, not to mention an enviable ability to fill in a lot of details of a story with very few actual words.

A couple of questions - are you going to rerecord this at some point. For whatever reason, some of the backing tracks seem out of sync with each other.

And the instrumentation is great. I'm assuming there's some sampling but I'd like to know about the banjo-like instrument that appears in the final stanza. Sounds a bit like a koto?

So now you've made my whole weekend, between today's song and my listening to "Not eBooks" yesterday. Thank you!

Looking forward to more.

Peace

Hi David,

I wasn't planning on rerecording, but I can try to tweak the sync/timing...I know what you mean about being out of sync. Some sounds come as a fixed things, so I need to learn to manipulate and time stretch to make them fit better...not a bad homework assignment for myself ;)
Sounds a bit like a koto?
That's what I was going for so I picked this sound which seemed close enough. I didn't look it up, I just choose it off the list of sounds in the synth:
Kora
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kora_(instrument)

So although it's not a koto, it seemed to work well enough to color the sound.
fill in a lot of details of a story with very few actual words.
Thanks for the confirmation, it's something I keep striving for....with a lot of practice thanks to you
So now you've made my whole weekend,
Now you've made mine! Thanks for the listens and posts

James, what a moving song! The music and lyrics are a very good match. Going back and forth between major and minor chords really works to show the contrast between the "perfect world" and the real world. The instruments fit well. It starts with the dreamy love story and ends with tragedy.

I was curious about the "little boy" reference, then remembered that it was a name for a type of atomic bomb. Looked it up and it was the one used on Hiroshima. Like David said, you say a lot with a few words.

Kora makes perfect sense and also answers why "banjo" sprung immediately to mind (the kora being one of the many instruments that led to the development of the banjo).

Very cool. I am at some point going to have to seriously invest in a synth again. Been way too long since I've played around with one.

Like the update, too, by the bye.

Peace
