Jazz is often ii V I
Rock and blues are often I IV V, rock will often throw in a ii, a iv, and sometimes a iii. Of course, there are sometimes borrowed chords and secondary dominants, but you'll come across them when you get to them.
Twenty billion and nine pop songs use I, vi, IV, V
Don't believe me? Count them

... and twenty billion and eight songs use the slightly lesser known I-vi-ii-V progression.
Both of them are used extensively in '50s ballads, especially in doo-wop songs.
Have a look at Olaf Torvund's messily laid out, but extremely informative guitar site.
The guitar progression part is here:

Money Chords is also good, but contains a lot of links to Olaf:

The -ii- can be used as a substitute for the -IV- as there's only one note difference, and the I-vi-ii-V sequence becomes a ii-V-I.
There you go - chord progressions and substitutions without pain.
