You could study Bach.  He had a way with harmony.

C&B,

Bach would definitely be a good place to begin, and remain for some time.  Truly beautiful melody, counterpoint, and variations.  Goldberg Variations, Partitas and Sonatas...

Like rock music, the genre is varied and broad so your tastes in music will determine who you end up studying. Actually, what you want to study will naturally be a determinant of what you study.  You'll glean different things from Debussy than you will from Beethoven and vice versa.

Personally, I'd recommend Bartok, Chopin, and Gyorgi Ligeti.  My favorites of all time.  Ligeti is sick, unbelievably so.  The intellect required to comprehend what is going on there is considerable...

Good luck with your search.       Mark

Likewise Fernando Sor and Ferdinando Carulli.

The Segovia Studies were written by Fernando Sor.

Chopin, but if you want something with a little more "bite" try some of the Russian and eastern European composers.  Modest Moussorgsky (you'll find different spellings on his name), Serge Prokofiev, Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, and I don't think you can go wrong with Beethoven (his passion was immense).  It's great to see others out their expanding their music knowledge.  You should also check out some Jazz Giants like Charlus Mingus, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Vince Guaraldi, and many other modern greats.
