Great tune; nice easy-to-play arrangement Doug! You're right, a little extra ornamentation goes a long way - just a few more hammer-ons here and there really sweetens it up - you can get that bag-pipe feel as in Hodge's Amazing Grace lesson.

I just wanted to point out, to anyone playing along with a metronome, be sure to set it to 3/4 time! I had mine in 4/4 and couldn't figure out why my timing was so off. Of course, the time signature is right there in the tab, and I can usually figure out the rhythmic notation, but this time ...

Oh, by the way, the song takes on a somewhat different character if you slow down the tempo, say to around 90bpm. Much more melancholy.

Cheers!

Yeah, this is a beautiful tune, and it it's really nice at a slower tempo. I first learned it on pipes and played it a little faster than Cannad's song version.

Maybe I should have done a slower version for the mp3 (which I considered). Just a thought...would you prefer a slow version or a performance speed version for the mp3 with the lessons? (I usually do something inbetween)...I know some books/CDs come with both.

Hey Doug. With easy lessons, I usually get by with just the full-speed version, but with Hodge's intermediate lessons I've found having both the slow and full-speed versions to be helpful. You might do both if you're posting something more advanced next time. Just my 2cents; others my have a different opinion. :)

I have been meaning to write, sorry it took so long.

Doug, thank you for such a beautiful peace. If this piece doesn't get someone interested in finger style guitar not sure what would. Easy and fun to play. Relaxing after a stressful day.

You can definately hear the bagpipes as well as see lush rolling hills of green when playing this one.

Keep 'em coming.

Mike

Thanks, Mike - more to come soon. I'm glad you enjoyed "Buachaill." I just need to find a few minutes to get the next lesson written out...

I'm so excited about this set of lessons.

I'm new to fingerstyle and seem to have taken a huge liking to celtic music (what's not to like).

I've just learned to play a small piece that was in one of our guitar mags, here in the UK. Although it's really simple, it's just so beatiful.

I've since been trawling the 'net to find other simple celtic tunes to learn... Why didn't I think of checking here first?

Hi Honeytone,

Great to hear you've taken to celtic music on guitar...BTW, my next lesson will be another fingerstyle arrangement of "The Southwind," a very well know tune that I often play with "Buachaill on Eirne."

Just curious which UK guitar mag had the piece you learned, and what the name of the tune was...we get a lot of the UK guitar magazines here, but I haven't popped by the bookstore for a few weeks.

Cheers,

It was actually in the 'Acoustic Special Edition' produced by Total Guitar, back in January.

I don't think the piece was from a song (I may be wrong), just a short demo/lesson on Celtic ornamentation.

This is really sweet, I've been trying to get more comfortable with working inside a steady tempo lately, other then playing along with songs of course, and it's really helped build up my skill. Plus the only real picking I've done on the guitar up to now are repeating patterns, so this has definately been an interesting challenge.

If you post any more old Irish diddly's you'll have me as a reader.

THANKS!!!

Thanks Saber - yes, more Irish and Celtic tunes to come. I've been incredibly busy with other projects as of late, but hope to get a new lesson done very soon...
