Took about 4 or 5 months, but my 13 year old finally hit the skins this evening. What's that mean for me? Well, an instant bass-less band. We played Honky-Tonk Woman, Start Me Up and Happy for an hour before he got tired. I must confess that my left thumb is hurting from Start Me Up too. Damned barchords. :)

I got a little confused with your wording, when you said, "...instant bass-less band." Did you mean that you won't have a bass player anymore, and if so is that because your son was your bass player?

Gotch' ya. Don't know how I didn't see that?

That's cool that you jam with your son, how long has he been playing?

Off an on for about three years. More off than on, but given his age.....

Now the tough part. I gotta learn a Green Day song. He's learning my Stones stuff. Only fair. Holliday, I think.

I've got the Guitar Pro open now. My Ibanez has some growly humbuckers in it, and I'm sure I can find a setting on my effects board that'll do the trick. Let's see, I'll need some black eye-liner......

Well, at least your playing with him, I still admire that. (even though he is corrupting you!) :D

I have a 10 year old son who has been playing drums since he was 8. It is a lot of fun to play with him too. But, he gets distracted from the drums from time to time. It is hard to get him on a consistent practice schedule, so I don't try. I figure, he will either really get into it and put in the time or it will fade away. His choice, I guess.

I agree. Make it too disciplined and they'll begin to dread it. Not the point of music, at all.

I have a 12-year-old son who I WANT to play the drums, (so I can buy a kit and mess with it), but he's not quite as interested as I am, I guess. Ah well, he is sticking with guitar fairly decently. Momma's got her Strat and now her bass. Someday she'll get her drums.

He's not quite as keen on playing (guitars) together as I am, but I haven't given up. He's working on the song 100 Years (Five for Fighting), so I am, too. He tends to prefer playing the melody line/lead, and I tend to prefer the chords/rhythm, so that'll work. He can play Eleanor Rigby pretty well, and the intros to stuff like Smoke On the Water and several others. He also wants to learn Walkin' in Memphis, so I can't fault his taste too much (yet).

The crud he listens to on the radio is another story........... :?

Man that's cool playing music with family members. Wish I had a wife who played bass or drums... :D

It's a good deal of fun. My wife is a budding artist, so she's not into the music thing. Still, she was painting in the same room as Mick and I were playing our music and enjoyed it. Even made a few comments, like "what the hell was that?" after I did that little riff Keith does right before the 1st verse.

I'm with Margaret about not pushing him too hard on the drums and other things like bsaeball.

I get your point about, parents always thinking their children's music is garbage. But, I highly disagree that the garbage out now is the SAME as the music of my youth!
