would anyone recommend one of those pre wired pickguards from the website I was "ogling" ?

Do you mean recommend them as an option, or suggest a specific one? A couple of the guys here are really advocates of those, and I think a prewired pickguard could really reduce the amount of soldering you'd have to do to get new pickups into the Squier.
And if you were looking at the goodies at GFS, you were ogling. Been there, done that. :P
