Yep, I agree. Slash was a little boring in the song, though it seems he tried his best to maintain some variety. Just look at the later part, how he is just bending the top 3 strings and strumming hard.

Great bass and drums. I also agree with CitizerNoir, that the vocals were very incoherent and broken and did hold back the 'feeling' more than the solo.

However what I really like the most in the song was Slash's Les Paul. What a beauty ! :D

Secondly the tone (not the playing) was the classic Slash. Loved it.

And on a trivial note, did anyone observed David Gilmour at the start of the video, with Nick Mason at his behind ? (I believe, he would have wanted to jump on stage and teach some improvisation to Slash. Wonder how he will perform with a Les Paul...)

Ah jeez. Yea it is. I didn't fast forward to the video for the switch. I must be thinking of another vid. I'll browse for it, if not...ah well, still pretty cool to see him use a different electric other than the strat.

I thought Slash was pretty great in this song. The song was played at a much slower tempo than the Hendrix recording, I think it made the song drag a little. But I have always liked Slash's style. He is very mainstream but great. His playing matched the slower tempo of the song.

And yes that was Steve Winwood (shares the same birthday as me, but older), and Billy Cox who Hendrix met in the Army and played with Jimi with the Band of Gypsies.

You can see Billy in this video.

+1 to that. What a player! :D

I must admit that I'm always just slightly offput by guys who dress up in the Slash manner with all the bling, tatts, top hat, dangling smoke, dark glasses etc. It's all just entertainment, and good in it's way too, but it still tends to give me a nagging feeling that they might be trying to distract you from whatever they don't quite have in their playing. Not that I could see too much wrong with what Slash did - but seeing Roy Buchanan afterwards just stand there and play like THAT... ... just brought quite a large lump to the thoat.... wonderful stuff. :)

I've got a couple of 2 CD Anniversary sets from Alligator Records that have Roy on them (plus some good stuff from a heap of others) so that's a good prompt to dig them out and have another listen. 8)

Cheers,

Chris

I'm pretty sure it is a Gretch. Its an awesome guitar. Thats from my favourite DVD ever. Every song is amazing on it, plus I'm in love with the cello player.

You can also hear him on a Steinberger (he still had hair, then), backing Kate Bush and doing well not to laugh at the biiiiiiiiiig hair of the bass player (a sort of Tina Turner mullet)

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

Old post just saw it. personally Steve's vocals were horrible, but I never liked him anyway and to me that ruined the song more than Slash's playing. Slash is the man, but I can't say that was his best playing.

Chris-c you have the exact opposite opinion that I have of what a "Rock" guitarist should look like. To me Slash epitomizes everything Rock n Roll. I didn't read all the posts but I assume the Roy you all are talking about is Roy Buchanan definitely a great player, check out his song Roy's Blues he really wails ...but man he looks like the anti-rock guitarist.

I just don't want to see a bunch of short haired clean cut looking corporate types playing rock and roll it's sacriligious.

"It's all about stickin it to the man!"
It's a long way to the top if you want to rock n roll!

He doesn't look old before his time, wasted, addled, ugly, strange, or self-absorbed either... you're supposed to be at least one of those aren't you? Can't really be a rocker surely? :P
