i have choosen the fictional character of my loving father.

"my loving father"

we'd play catch out in the backyard.
where you stood 10 feet tall
said i'd play major league baseball

i heard you say i could do anything
and i believed it
i'd believe anything you said

you were the number one
you never yelled at mom
the proof is inside of me
the man i'll grow to be

you never stole thousands of dollars
and said you would repay
only to steal more everyday

wait til you're old and i will take good care
of your dying self
i hope you never go to hell

Ok, Ok, Homeboy,

I've been agonizing over this one for 3 days.  I just don't like it.  (Somewhere on this site, Nick says we're not allowed to say it sucks)  Anyway, I don't think it sucks.

I think my problem is that I don't like what you're saying. But since I don't know you or your father, I have no basis for that judgement.  So if I lay that aside, and just look at the song in terms of it's components, I have to say it's pretty good.  Much better than the Wind-up-Bird song.  Yet I liked that one, and not this one.  Go figure.

Anyway, as to the components, the song itself is good. In 4 three-line verses, (very concise ones at that) you build from totally innocuous, to completely hateful. Or perhaps more accurately, from bland to emotionally charged.  That's pretty impressive.  The story is laid out well, it rhymes well, and it just flows.  It's a good song.  I just don't like it.

But other folks probably do.  The traffics been kinda light this week.

Anyways, that's my $0.02.  Use it or trash it as you choose.

you're not suppose to like what i say.
the point is the more lovingly i talk about him, the more hatefull you read it. and i won't go into my relationship with my dad cuz i'm not asking you to take sides.
i honestly don't care if everybody said it sucked. let that rule not apply to me. i just found it funny that despite over 30 views (which i think is the most of this week.) nobody responded (which i think is the least of this week) ... i'm not saying i'm better than anyone.. but when i read people's stuff here.. it never seems personal.

to quote my hero Morrissey
"any fool can think of words that rhyme.. so sing your life"

Well,... stick around.  You'll see personal stuff come up. Not every week, but they do show up.

You said yesterday that honesty is what makes a song good.  And this song certainly has that.  You did what you meant to do, and it works well on a number of levels.

And while you're stickin' around, why don't you set up a profile, man?

I've been thinking on that ever since you posted it last night.  You're absolutely right.  I think I've been putting too much importance on my own likes & dislikes when I write these comments, and as a result, paying less attention to structure, story, rhyme, meter, etc...  Thanks for the reminder.

At the top right of the page it says "Welcome Guest, Login or Register"  Click on register and fill in your info.  As much or as little as you want.  I think the only things that are required are a username and password, but I might be mistaken.
